Karen Travers
Karen, for over 30 years, developed, administered and taught field-based botany/ natural history programs and led trips through the Delaware Nature Society, University of Delaware, Delaware Teacher Center, Federal Title 11 grants and local land trusts. These included local, national and international destinations such as the Great Smoky Mountains, Florida Keys, Hawaii, Scotland, New Zealand, Australia, Scandinavia, Iceland, Swiss Alps, Tuscany, Ecuador and Galapagos, Tahiti, and Fiji. Topics included field identification, best-performing mid Atlantic native plants, invasive plant control, backyard habitats, ecosystem assessment, biodiversity and rare plant populations.
As a field biologist, she conducted baseline biodiversity studies for land trust conservation easements and advised landowners on improving ecosystem health with the creative addition of native plants. She is currently serving as a Mt. Cuba Center docent, teaches plant ecology programs and leads botany-based field trips. Her home garden with over 175 species of native plants provides practical hands-on horticultural experience.
