Joe is the Ashland Nature Center Manager for the Delaware Nature Society, and has worked for the organization since 1998. Joe has traveled in search of birds and wildlife since childhood and has led nature-based adventures to Cuba, Trinidad, Costa Rica, Canada, Ecuador, Brazil, Nebraska, Maine, New York, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, and a multitude of locations in and around Delaware. Joe is past President of the Delmarva Ornithological Society, founded the Ashland Hawk Watch, and is Delaware eBird data reviewer for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. As a native of Kennett Square, PA, Joe attended Penn State University, where he earned a degree in Environmental Resource Management and Wildlife Science. He also has a Masters degree in Education from West Chester University.

Mt. Cuba Center's Natural Lands Staff includes Nate Shampine, CERP, Lou Schurter, Steve Hands, and John Walls. This exceptional team manages 1000 acres of natural lands, primarily focusing on promoting and maintaining ecological function of healthy habitats. This includes reforestation, pollinator restoration, grassland management, invasive plant removal, and creating habitat diversity on the landscape.
